A gorgeously adorned indoor wedding venue with colourful lights and flowers. Inside the hall, there are about people engrossed in chatter. Nobody seems to be paying attention to what is going on the stage in front of them, popularly known as the “mandap.”
The groom and his family patiently wait for the arrival of the bride. Finally, the moment arrives when the bride elegantly walks onto the stage accompanied by her tight-knit family. People who were preoccupied until then started to admire the beautiful bride, or so I thought. However, to my utter dismay, I realized that it was not the bride, but her sovereigns of gold they were all interested in.
This kind of union is typical in India. The bride is frequently viewed as a commodity when the family meets the desire of the husband.Religion-based variations in wedding are possible, but the bride’s gold displayionism never changes. It is distant from reality, despite the fact that we all profess it to be a part of our tradition. The groom’s family typically receives these gold trinkets as dowry afterward. In India, the urge for dowery is deeply ingrained and unaffected by money, culture, or location. Even if laws have been created, their application looks shaky. While the media covers a small percentage of the reported incidents, many others go unreported and unaddressed. Most of the time, women attempt to tolerate this out of dread of the consequences or the future prospect of a good family life. The terrible thing is that this forbearance is not worth a life that might never turn into reality. The knowledge that dowry has the potential to stifle all feelings and connections is incredibly depressing.
It is possible to eradicate dowager from our society. When the ladies and their families don’t speak out against it, a problem results. A girl’s family and society must stand by her and support her when she is tormented or tortured in the name of money or gold. It’s past time for us to acknowledge that unless we speak out against certain viewpoints, people won’t change them. By launching a campaign to support the Dowry Prohibition Act, we will be preserving the lives of numerous girls who merit a quiet existence.
