Abstract: Before acting, we should consider what the others believe, as this notion can influence our values, aspirations, and the impact each of us can have on the world. We become dependent on approval and develop a need for affirmation, avoid conflict, and crumble when we hint at criticism. We should be apprehensive about taking the stage if we stumble, as it can lead to judgement and ridicule. However, our confidence is unaffected by how we talk, do, and feel. Society has a power to influence our thoughts and behavior, and it is important to consider whether this is a personal or public action.
What may the others believe? Before acting, this notion prompts our minds. That is probably for a good reason. When we do something wrong, it helps to reevaluate our beliefs and our desire to make amends. But when practised to the extreme, every virtue might become a vice. We become estranged from our values, our aspirations, and the impact each of us can have on the world when we stop listening to what we think. Instead, we start listening to what other people may think. We become dependent on approval, develop a constant need for affirmation, avoid situations that can result in conflict, and crumble at the first hint of criticism.Say, for example, that everyone wants to be a competent public speaker. What’s holding you back? The audience. We are apprehensive about taking the stage because we are concerned about what others would think of us if we stumble. They’ll make fun of us, judge us, and laugh at us. We don’t want to go through that, either. But keep in mind that you have the guts to talk, do, and feel anything. Even if you mispronounce your next word, your confidence is unaffected. Now consider it. You emerged from the gathering of people who wanted to speak but were paralysed by dread.Who is the winner in this scenario?Undoubtedly you. You will fail, but not always. We frequently miss this, yet focusing on cultural perceptions turns us into puppets. Someone else has power over the way we think. For an IIT exam, a student is preparing. She was a brilliant student in school, and society has high hopes for her. She is under tremendous pressure. Is this a personal or public action?Unquestionably a social action. It may occasionally be mentally present even if it is not physically there.Years of colonisation have given us a fair complexion inferiority complex. You see a fair guy approaching while out on a date. Do you chose him or the society? Then there are businesses that will develop items with the promise of enhancing your complexion. How did this all come about? We provided society a chance to take advantage of others. Did we not?Because we are only the society and not at all ourselves, we are terrified of the society. Before acting, consider and ask yourself: “Do I have the free choice to do this? Will I approve of it? Is it a topic I’m interested in? Or is it simply the influence of society?” If the answer is affirmative, you should rexinsidee the assumptions you have framed about the people.
