Overturning of Roe vs. Wade judgement:US

Recently, a leak by political journalism company Politico, headquartered in Arlington, has revealed that US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, has decided to overturn the landmark judgement: Roe vs. Wade, 1973 which made abortion a constitutional right. This has sent shockwaves across the country and actuated the activists on both the side of the controversy.
In this judgement, US Supreme court set a benchmark for abortion laws across the world which made abortion illegal in several states. It ruled that abortion would be allowed to point of foetal viability, that is, the time after which the foetus can survive outside the womb. The foetal viability was around 28 weeks at the time of inception of Roe judgement, which later was brought down to 23 or 24 weeks considering the advancement in medicine.
The ongoing controversy regarding abortion is surrounded by moral, religious and legal status of induced abortion. The people in western countries have contrary approaches with respect to abortion- “pro- choice” and “pro-life” movements. Pro- choice supporting women’s choice whether to terminate the pregnancy, while the pro- life stresses the humanity of mother and the foetus, arguing that they deserve legal protection.
The court’s decision to overturn the judgement, will sprout up anti- abortion voices across the world, jeopardizing the reproductive freedom and the right to control one’s destiny. Many Republican legislatures could prevent women from travelling out of state for the treatment. Such an extreme law could lead to unwanted additions to the families, with minority, poor and black communities getting affected the most. Cathryn Oakley, an attorney with the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ rights organization in the US, has claimed that LGBTA+ community will be directly impacted by the court’s ruling since they seek, receive and use contraception. Further it is a menace to the, minority rights, such as same- sex marriage, which became a rule after Obergefell v. Hodges judgement.
The real concern is not the massive protest outside the buildings, which will be protected by armed cops or heavy gates; It’s not about the legal pandemonium which will follow; it’s not about how the legislative bodies would handle the laws or hospitals charged with murder case for violating the law. The real apprehension is for those women, who, will be denied their bodily rights. Their lives would become less dignified by unplanned or unchosen pregnancies.
Democracies allow the rights of a citizen to be progressed and deepened further. The US reversal decision is a step forward towards democratic retrogress.
